What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an Electronic Application Management System
Express Entry is an electronic system that manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs:
-
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
-
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
-
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
Candidates create an online profile and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence through periodic rounds of invitations.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Class is an economic immigration category under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. It applies to skilled foreign nationals who can become permanent residents based on their ability to economically establish in Canada, and who intend to live outside Quebec.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as a skilled worker, an applicant must:
-
Work Experience:
Have at least 1 year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience within the last 10 years in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation.-
Must perform the lead statement and essential/main duties of the occupation.
-
-
Language Proficiency:
Submit valid (less than 2 years old) results from an approved English or French test meeting the minimum required benchmark in all four skills. -
Education:
Provide either:-
A Canadian educational credential, or
-
A foreign credential with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) (less than 5 years old).
-
-
If the occupation is regulated and a designated professional body exists, the ECA must confirm equivalency to the Canadian licensing requirement.
If these minimum requirements are not met, the application is refused without further assessment.
Selection Criteria (Points System)
Eligible candidates are assessed on a 100-point grid and must meet a minimum threshold set by the Minister.
Six selection factors:
-
Education (max 25 points)
-
Language ability (max 28 points)
-
Work experience (max 15 points)
-
Age (max 12 points)
-
Arranged employment in Canada (max 10 points)
-
Adaptability (max 10 points)
Settlement Funds Requirement
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient available and transferable funds to support themselves and their family, unless they have valid arranged employment in Canada.
The Federal Skilled Worker Class is a merit-based immigration pathway focused on human capital factors (education, language, experience). Meeting the minimum requirements allows entry into assessment, but strategic optimization of points is critical for success.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an economic immigration category for foreign nationals who have recent skilled work experience in Canada and the ability to economically establish in the country. Applicants must intend to live outside Quebec.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify under the CEC, an applicant must:
1. Canadian Work Experience
-
Have at least 1 year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada
-
The experience must:
-
Be gained within the last 3 years before applying
-
Be in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations
-
Exclude restricted occupations
-
2. Job Duties Requirement
-
Must have:
-
Performed the lead statement of the occupation
-
Completed a substantial number of main duties, including all essential duties
-
3. Language Requirements
-
Must take an approved English or French test
-
Must meet the minimum language threshold set by the Minister in all four skills:
-
Reading, writing, listening, speaking
-
-
If experience is in multiple occupations:
-
Language level must match the occupation with the most experience
-
Important Conditions on Work Experience
The following do NOT count toward the required work experience:
-
Work performed while studying full-time
-
Self-employment
-
Unauthorized work
Additionally:
-
The applicant must have held valid temporary resident status while working in Canada
CEC is designed for individuals with recent Canadian skilled work experience. There is no points grid like the Federal Skilled Worker Program (selection is handled through Express Entry ranking) and the focus is on real Canadian work experience + language ability. Meeting the requirements makes you eligible, but selection depends on Express Entry ranking (CRS score).
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
The FSTP is designed for foreign nationals with experience in specific skilled trades who want to become permanent residents of Canada. Unlike the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the FSTP focuses on hands-on trade skills rather than formal education levels.
Key points:
-
It is one of the three federal programs managed through Express Entry (alongside FSWP and Canadian Experience Class).
-
Candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) if they enter the Express Entry pool.
-
Applicants must demonstrate both work experience and job readiness in Canada.
Skilled trades need specialized knowledge and hands-on work. You’ll need an apprenticeship for most trades.
Skilled tradespeople may work in sectors such as:
-
construction
-
transportation
-
manufacturing and industrial
-
natural resources and agriculture
Your skilled work experience must:
Be in the same NOC and be in 1 of these NOC groups:
-
Major Groups 72 (excluding Sub-Major Group 726), 73, 82, 83, 92, or 93 (excluding Sub-Major Group 932)
-
Minor Group 6320
-
Unit Group 62200
Show that you performed:
-
the actions in the lead statement of the NOC job description, and most of the main duties listed
-
Meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the NOC
Be paid work
-
You must have been paid wages or earned commission (volunteer work or unpaid internships don’t count)
-
Have been obtained in a country where you were qualified to practice
-
Be at least 2 years of full-time work experience (or 3,120 hours total) in a skilled trade within the 5 years before you apply
Your skilled work experience must meet all the above requirements to be eligible.
Rounds of Invitations Under Express Entry
Candidates in the Express Entry pool are invited to apply for permanent residence through periodic rounds of invitations held throughout the year. The process for each round is determined based on Canada’s immigration priorities and labour market needs.
Types of Rounds of Invitations
1. General Rounds of Invitations
General rounds target top-ranking candidates who are eligible under at least one of the three programs managed through Express Entry:
-
Federal Skilled Worker Program
-
Canadian Experience Class
-
Federal Skilled Trades Program
2. Program-Specific Rounds
Program-specific rounds focus on candidates eligible for a particular Express Entry managed program.
For example, in a round dedicated to the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), only candidates with a valid provincial nomination are invited to apply.
3. Category-Based Rounds
Category-based selection allows invitations to be issued to candidates who meet specific criteria aligned with Canada’s economic priorities. These categories are established by the Minister and may consider factors such as:
-
Proficiency in an official language (e.g., French)
-
Work experience in targeted occupations
-
Educational background
Candidates must still qualify under one of the three Express Entry programs to be included in the pool.
Current categories:
The following categories have been identified to address specific labor market needs:
-
French-language proficiency
-
Healthcare and social services occupations
-
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations
-
Trade occupations
-
Education occupations
-
Transport occupations
-
Physicians with Canadian work experience
-
Senior managers with Canadian work experience
-
Researchers with Canadian work experience
-
Skilled military recruits
Category-based rounds are designed to complement general and program-specific rounds. In some cases, if sufficient eligible candidates are already selected through other rounds, a category-based round may not be necessary.
